And the winner (of the Booker Prize) is ... Kiran Desai with The Inheritance of Loss

And the winner of the Man Booker Prize 2006 is The Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai.

(And not the hotly tipped favourite - The Night Watch by Sarah Waters.)

Meh. Think I'll wait for the paperback. In about a year's time... I have a limited tolerance for 'ethni-lit' as too much of it reads like a pale imitation of Salman Rushdie. Admittedly the last Booker winner I didn't read - or at least attempt - was also from the Indian subcontinent: Arundhati Roy's The God of Small Things from 1997. But trusted reader friends all hated it.

I wouldn't mind trying Kate Grenville's The Secret River.
