Your ideas wanted on where's happening in Belfast ...

Belfast Wheel

Since social networking and blogging is all about sharing, collaboration and wisdom of crowds, let’s put it to the test. (Nothing like setting yourself up for failure!)

An email arrived recently in my inbox from a French journalist who planning to come across to film in Belfast ...

French journalist living in Paris, I plan to come to Belfast to shoot a 5 minutes TV report about the city.

In my preparation I am looking for the "places to be" in Belfast, which does not mean the touristy places but the places where young people go out, fashion places, or specific tendancy in the city, anything that would be new and typically "belfastian".

Thanks by advance for your help,

Florence

So what would fellow Belfastians recommend? Where’s trendy and happening?

A lovely Cathedral Quarter bar, John Hewitt or McHughs (McHughs having more for the "young people" I guess). The Apartment too. Limelight or Laverys if she wants to talk about local music. Clements. The QFT. Victoria Square. The Odyssey (?). Ikea.

Send them to the Merchant or Cafe Vaudeville, and let on that these are the kind of places Belfastians frequent on a regular basis.

Without any doubt, the National Trust's recently-restored Crown Bar: I had a Yuletide binge there before Christmas!

Quirky place we hang out many Saturdays is the bottom bar at the Europa between 3:30 - 6pm. Gerry Rice and his band play their own particular sort of jazz and a lot of old people get drunk and 'dance'. Strange mix of bemused tourists, displaced wedding guests from upstairs and old folk (and me, in 20s!). Great fun, often spot Alex Higgins with his artistic friends.

You have a most interesting blog, Alan.

Speaking as an exile of (ahem) a few years, I'd say the new Ikea, and the Odyssey on a big ice hockey night. I've seen the NHL at Madison Square Garden, and the atmosphere was crap compared to a good Giants game.

Young people? What are you asking us for!

NOT Cafe Vaudeville... any city in the world has a bar where the over paid hang out in over the top surroundings. Belfast is not about the venues but rather about the events, the festivals. Black Box is a good start, but its the wee promoters like Bruised fruit, Fortune Cookie etc that are the Belfastians to watch. Any vistor who really wants to see the non- Tourist Board side should head to their web sites.
