A big (belated) Happy Birthday to Lilian Spence, an East Belfast lady who celebrated her 108th birthday on New Year’s Eve.
Born in 1898 before the partition of Ireland, the Belfast Telegraph says that she “is one of a handful of people on the island - all women - who were born in the 19th century and are still alive well into the 21st.”
Her father worked on the ill- fated Titanic, which was built by Harland and Wolff shipyard and sank in 1912 on its maiden voyage across the Atlantic. “I do recall he took us down to see it,” Lilian recalled. “It was huge.”
She's also the Mothers Union Ireland's oldest member!
Update - January 2008 - It was with sadness that I read online that Lilian Spence died on 28 January 2008 - not long after her 109th birthday.
